Budrus
Budrus is a place which has many memories for us at Zaytoun; being one of the villages we visited when we were researching the idea of setting up which gave us insight and inspiration into the issues Palestinians are facing. We are delighted that this film is out and hope it will enable more people to understand the issues.
‘Budrus is an award-winning feature documentary film about a Palestinian community organizer, Ayed Morrar, who unites local Fatah and Hamas members along with Israeli supporters in an unarmed movement to save his village of Budrus from destruction by Israel’s Separation Barrier. Success eludes them until his 15-year-old daughter, Iltezam, launches a women’s contingent that quickly moves to the front lines. Struggling side by side, father and daughter unleash an inspiring, yet little-known, movement in the Occupied Palestinian Territories that is still gaining ground today. Olive Harvest News
Zaytoun’s picking team is now in Palestine; we will share news from them as we get it. Our tour group is off in a few weeks too.
If you are interested in coming to Palestine for the olive harvest next year please check back on our harvest page http://www.zaytoun.org/harvest/about-the-harvest/
The majority of the Palestinian olive production is in the West Bank and part of their domestic market is to Gaza. The current separation of the West Bank and Gaza has turned this domestic sales process into one which is more difficult than export; though the areas are geographically close (45 minutes drive) the barriers of occupation mean many Palestinians from the two areas have never seen the other. Gaza does have some olive production and there are some images of olive harvest on this link http://www.demotix.com/news/456873/palestinians-collect-olives-during-olive-harvest-gaza-strip
Here’s a report about this year’s harvest from our Palestinian director, Taysir Arbasi:
“This year’s harvest season is starting soon, and the farmers are getting prepared to celebrate the season and pick the olives that have been waiting for 2 years. What is important to highlight this year is the widespread high quality culture of the olive oil, and here it worth mentioning that some cooperatives in Tulkarem area have already started early picking and early pressing to extract a premium quality of oil.
In Anabta about 15 farmers picked about one tonne of olives and pressed it to test; the results are amazing where they managed to extract about 250 KG of 0.01.5 acidity. These quantities been picked carefully by hand and delivered directly to the press house.
This year these farmers are targeting international exhibitions to present their oil and their message is “this oil that is coming from an olive tree neither east nor west, this oil of the peaceful tree will be lighting the way to the people of the world to see what cultures and customs they should support” Adnan Hanoon, a farmer from Kufr Labad.
Adnan says ” we have been waiting for such a good season for the past 2 years in order to firstly celebrate the Baraka (giving) of the trees and to find some money in our hands to support our families and our brothers in who needs our support in our communities”
The idea of starting the harvest about 2 weeks earlier is to extract the first cold virgin olive oil, this oil will include the higher level of protective elements as a component of the oil itself – these strengthen its life cycle. Such oil is assumed to stay as new fresh extra virgin for 2 years before the quality starts to decrease.
This new culture of olive farming will be always kept and developed from generation to another.”
