T4L LogoTrees for Life

Zaytoun, in cooperation with the Olive Coop and PFTA in PAlestine, are pleased to promote the Trees for Life programme. This gives people in the UK the chance to sponsor the planting of olive trees, which partially offsets the destruction wrought by the Israeli army and settlers in many of the groves. Settlement and settlement road building and the construction of the Separation Wall have seen hundreds of thousands of trees bulldozed and cut down. According to the Applied Research Institute Jerusalem over 500,000 olive trees have been destroyed since 2000. Each new tree sponsored represents a long-term source of income for Palestinian families, who have been harvesting olive oil, fruit and wood for generations. Details of the scheme can be found on the neck tags on some of our bottles, and also on http://www.olivecoop.com/trees.html

Palestinian Olive Oil

All of Zaytoun’s oil is extra virgin, first cold pressed, organically grown and fairly traded. The oil sourced through Sindyanna of Galilee is organic certified. The oil sourced through Canaan, PARC and UAWC is in conversion organic. Our suppliers source the oil from cooperatives in the areas of Salfit, Tulkarem, Nablus, Jenin and the Galilee.

Olive oil is an integral part of the Palestinian economy and culture. Olive oil production goes back 5,000 years in Palestine and the olive trees have been passed through generations of same family. The harvest today still sees the whole family, from great grand parent down to the children and babies, coming together under their trees to harvest their fruit. The olives are hand picked and taken on a daily basis to the local press house. Every year Zaytoun members and some of our customers join the farmers we buy our oil from to during the harvest (link to harvest page). The taste of the warm, peppery oil straight from the press and the rich smell of oil in the air are unforgettable. Zaytoun are proud to offer you this delicious taste of Palestine.

Zaatar - Wild Grown Herb Mix

Za’atar is an everyday staple in the Middle East; a herb mix of wild thyme, toasted sesame and sumac. It is a zesty seasoning, delicious with olive oil on fresh bread, on tomato salads, rubbed into chicken before roasting….be warned, its fresh taste is addictive! Zaytoun’s za’atar is sourced from a women's cooperative in Jenin.

Olive Soap from Nablus in the West Bank

The ancient city of Nablus has been producing soap since the 10th Century. Olive oil is the principal ingredient of this natural soap. The soap is made and cut by hand in beautiful, old soap houses by skilled craftsmen. It is naturally cleansing & suitable for all skin types including oily skin. Zaytoun’s soap contains 72% olive oil which is sourced from Palestinian olive farmers in the Nablus region.

Olive Twig Baskets

The basket is called Qirtalla; it is a traditional Palestinian hand woven basket from primarily olive tree twigs. Qirtalla making is an ancient tradition in Palestine that persists in few villages in the Ramallah and Jerusalem area. Crafters are olive growers and the Qirtallah making is an activity that goes hand in hand with olive orchard maintenance. Crafters use the olive branched that grow on the bottom of the tree trunk that become harmful to the fruit bearing branches if not pruned. This is an attractive and functional basket.

Dates

The ‘Medjoul’ is the finest of dates. It is grown in the Jericho area which has the perfect climate for producing these delicious, soft and succulent dates. They are sourced through the Palm Farmers Cooperative and are a vital source of income in this area which is seeing vast tracts of land illegally confiscated by Israel.

Almonds

The ‘Om Al-Fahim’ is a premium almond. This variety, traditionally grown here as it thrives on the arid and rocky terrain, produces a large, sweet almond. Zaytoun almonds are sourced from a farmers cooperative in the Jenin area.

Cous Cous

We were proud to introduce our first Gazan produce last year, but sadly it is not possible at this time to export anything from Gaza. The couscous we currently have on sale is from Jenin, but we hope that in the future we will be able to source more Gazan produce.
